211 STUDIO ASSIGNMENT

IPTS (2013) STANDARD 2 - Content Area and Pedagogical Knowledge - The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.

Description:  Below is my double exposure example and my artist statement for the piece. This is an example of what my high school yearbook class did for my Celebration of Self unit plan that I created.

Rationale: These show my understanding of how to use photoshop to create a double exposure by combining two images to create one. My artist statement demonstrates how to write about your work in a meaningful way that shows my understanding of the artists and connects that with my idea of celebration of self.

Evidence: See examples below.

211 UNIT PLAN

IPTS (2013) - STANDARD 1 - Teaching Diverse Students - The competent teacher understands the diverse characteristics and abilities of each student and how individuals develop and learn within the context of their social, economic, cultural, linguistic, and academic experiences. The teacher uses these experiences to create instructional opportunities that maximize student learning.

Description: In this unit plan that I created, It was introducing photoshop to the students. I taught a yearbook class so they have editing and photography skills so I wanted to build off of that with this project. The lesson was titled "Celebration of Self" and combined one image of themself and one image of something in their life that they wanted to celebrate.

Rationale: With the basic editing skills and tools of photoshop I taught in class, the students will be able navigate photoshop to create a double exposure poster using two images of themselves. They also will then be able to write an artist statement using guided questions and explain the meaning of their work and how it is a celebration of self.

Evidence:   See unit plan below.

211 STUDIO ASSIGNMENT ASSESSMENT

IPTS (2013) -STANDARD 7 - Assessment - The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessment for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.

Description:  For this plan, I will be assessing the students based on the following objectives for the unit

1.    Students will be able to analyze artists work and discuss how their work shows emotion, depth, or meaning and be able use the artist as inspiration to brainstorm ideas for their double exposure project.

2.    Students will be able to take several portraits or candid images of themselves or their classmates to choose a final three images for the project.

3.    After analyzing different artists, the students will generate at least two preliminary ideas of what their “Celebration of self” poster will be of and how it will portray a positive aspect of themselves or their life.

4.    Students will learn how to use photoshop to edit and combine at least 2 images to create a single poster using a photograph of themselves that they took and a photograph of something that is a positive part of their life or brings them happiness.

5.    Students will write a reflection of their project to tell its message, one thing that works and one thing that could be improved and how.

6.    Students will complete a practice image using Photoshop tools.

The summative assessment being the final double exposure project and the formative assessment being the practice image that they complete in class as they practice using the tools.

Rationale:  The formative assessment allows me to see how the students are doing with understanding photoshop and how to use it. It is a good time for an assessment because it allow me to see where they are at before they move onto the final project. The summative assessment shows me what they learned overall and how they improved since completing their practice image.

ARTIST HANDOUT AND POWER POINT

IPTS (2013) STANDARD 6 -Reading, Writing, and Oral Communication - The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.

Description:  I created an artist hand out to help give a deeper level of understanding of the artists used in this unit. The handout gave a background of the artists and the work they create and helped guide class discussion. The powerpoint includes the videos, artist examples, and framework questions that we watch and talked about in class. I also created a photoshop cheat sheet as an aid in learning the tools and navigating photoshop.

Rationale:   The artist handout and powerpoint include questions about he artists and their work that incorporate the  structural, conceptual, cultural and post-modern frameworks. These questions allowed the students to think deeper about the work shown and their own. It also made them make connections between different artists and works.

Evidence:  See below.
