Description: For the first three weeks of Saturday classes, my group and I taught 1st graders. We created a lesson swith the big idea of space and imagination.  We created a series of projects that built on from the last for our three weeks with the first graders. Day one we taught the basics of how to do basic clay techniques and the students created their own clay alien. On day two, the studnets created planets by using a paint pouring technique and we taught them about cool and warm colors.  When they finished their planets, they painted their alien clay creations with underglaze. On day three, our students got to create a collaborative mural that would serve as the galaxy for their alien and planet to live in. They got to experiment with a wide range of painting techniques and materials. We ended the lesson by having the students fill out a guided artist hand out sheet and she shared their alien, planet, and galaxy with the class.

Rationale: We wanted our students to be very engaged each class and be excited about what they were learning and creating. We had various activities through out each class to help us present information in fun and engaging ways. We hit on the big idea of imagination which all students have knowledge of. On day one, we asked them about their experience with the materials that we would be using for this lesson so that gave us some background information on students prior knowledge before jumping in. Each week we would make sure to talk about things from the previous weeks so the kids could make connections each week.

Description: For the second two weeks of Saturday classes, my group and I taught the 5th graders. We created a city planning lesson where we talked about the big idea of community. We had the students working collaboratively to create and build  a 3D city using paper and recycled materials. They worked together to design their ideal city and tackle issues such as public transport, housing, resources, etc. While working together, students had to justify their ideas to their classmates and compromise on ideas and thoughts.

Rationale: We learned that these students worked very well together. They talked through ideas and thoughts about their city very respectfully but very intentionally. This project taught them valuable argumentative skills as well as how to work as a part of a team.

Saturday Classes SATURDAY CLASS CLASSROOM SET-UP DOCUMENTATION

IPTS Standard 4 - Learning Environment - The competent teacher structures a safe and healthy learning environment that facilitates cultural and linguistic responsiveness, emotional well-being, self-efficacy, positive social interaction, mutual respect, active engagement, academic risk-taking, self-motivation, and personal goal setting. This includes a virtual environment and any learning aids used within a Google Drive.
7D: understands how to organize the instructional environment to maximize students’ learning.

Description:  We set up our classroom for Saturday classes in a way that allowed students to move from one place to another so they weren't stuck sitting in one place for too long. First graders are very antsy, so we set up our classroom into stations so that one area of the classroom was designated to paint pouring for their planets , another spot was strictly for gathering materials, and another station was for painting their aliens.

Rationale: We set up our classroom this way so that students would be able to focus on one thing at a time and not get distracted by other materials for a next project. We also did this because it was good for them to be able to get up and move around because they can only sit in one spot for so long.
